'Really fantastic' Jesus

TIDINGS photo
The new Italian hand-carved crucifix rests above the sanctuary at Holy Redeemer Church

Cardinal Mahony congratulated the parishioners for their "really fantastic" [newly renovated] worship space. He failed to mention the "really fantastic" crucifix with Jesus coming down from the cross.

"This is Jesus's third attempt at Olympic Gold in diving. Let's watch as He sets up for the triple somersault with a half-twist, a dive that's given Him trouble during practice."

The way I would put the problem here is that the traditional crucifix is a representation of an actual historical event. It represents what one would have seen had one been there at the time. The "contemporary cross" with Jesus somehow coming off it, often with a dove in his hand or something, reveals the same scandal at the crucifix that Protestants had and still have with it, but is actually even further devolved from the traditional Catholic crucifix, because the sentiment or vision that created this cross appears to be scandalized at the Christ who really appeared in history and actually suffered and died on the cross as a human. The "ressurecifix," or whatever you want to call it, is blind to that, and portrays something that did not actually happen. It turns salvation history into mere myth, making Jesus a Dionysus figure. That is how deaf to the Gospel we've become, and how far paganized we've let our religious iconography become.

We continue to be denied knowledge of the most beautiful death in the history of the world which was that of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who SUFFERED an ignominious death to redeem fallen mankind. After being placed in a tomb, THEN He rose from the dead.

Thanks be to God, Mel Gibson took it upon himself to give us an idea of the Crucifixion.

We need to know of the PASSION! The Cross is our portal to eternal life.

Ave Maria!

Oh, no, no- we do NOT need a stage-diving Jesus.
