Passing the 'plate' for Guadalupe

NORTH COUNTY TIMES reports ...

LOS ANGELES - Members of the Los Angeles Archdiocese are being asked to donate a piece of china so the pieces can be added to a shrine at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, church officials said Friday.

A shrine honoring the Patroness of the Americas is being expanded, and church officials want to incorporate parishioners' china into the design.

The size of the shrine was initially limited because of budgetary constraints, but with the help of private donations, church officials expect the expansion to be completed in about a year.

The biggest addition to the shrine will be a mosaic depicting the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego in 1531.

Church officials want parishioners to donate one piece of their china to the Cathedral between Friday and Monday -- the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The cups and plates will then be crushed into smaller pieces and incorporated into the mosaic.

The project will cost $250,000, half of which has already been donated, [Monsignor] Kostelnik said.
Many people in the Hispanic community, especially us Mexicanos who have a unique affection for la Virgencita de Guadalupe, have expressed great dissatisfaction with the outdoor shrine. Read more about our disappointment HERE.

What a 'crackpot' idea.

I don't understand why this is an outdoor shrine. I guess there is still no room inside for a young, pregnant mother-to-be.

That is a strange idea. Where do they come up with this stuff? Smashing china to build a monument to Our Lady? Why don't they start with a simple devotion to Our Lady, who has crushed all heresies throughout the whole world.

I'm just sure that that all the Latinos have spare China sitting around their house.. And WHY would the archdiocese want to expand something they apparently don't want all that much (seeing as Our Lady isn't worthy of seeing the interior of the Cathedral)?

Who comes up with these strange ideas? I'd really like to know. Is it Mahony, Kostelnik, or Sitrick and Co.?

Inquiring minds want to know!!!

This is a delightful idea. It reminds me of one of the rizas on the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa which was made from the wedding rings of many of her devotees.

Just look at that pathetic looking "shrine." Like everything else at the cathedral, it hurts the eyes. One would think that LA -- which is home to the largest grouping of Mexicans after Mexico City -- would have an extraordinarily beautiful shrine to the Mother of God, but no. It makes me want to cry.

Strange. Millions for that ugly cathedral and "budget constraints" for a shrine to Our Lady of Gudalupe. Very strange.
