Thu Mar 9 counter-picket at LA Federal Bldg

How is your pro-life Lent coming? Are you looking for a pro-life activity or prayer intention this week? LA pro-life leader Astrid Bennett has the answer for us.

She says pro-aborts are calling for a "day of solidarity" at Federal courthouses across our Nation to oppose South Dakota's just-signed abortion ban. She adds:

"Join pro-lifers in Los Angeles for a COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION to stand up for LIFE and CELEBRATE THE VICTORY in South Dakota.

Thursday, March 9, 2006

Los Angeles Federal Building
11000 Wilshire Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90024

"Please bring signs especially graphic signs that depict what "choice" really means -the horrendous murder of our innocent brothers and sisters. Also please come spiritually prepared (armed with the Holy Rosary and holy water if possible). Let's defend this just law in SD and pray that it will become the direct challenge to Roe v. Wade that will finally end the killing.

"Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:54-57).

"Hope to see you tomorrow! God bless you and protect you all,

Astrid Bennett"

Quintero says...Sorry for the short notice about this super event on Thursday. It will be GREAT if you can show up to support our local pro-lifers and to witness for the babies. And if you simply cannot be there, it will be great if you can pray for the pro-lifers who are there; and for the closing of all abortion mills, the conversion of all pro-aborts and the nullification of pro-abortion influence -- and for conversion and help for all abortion-tempted moms and dads, and for the safety of their babies.

I'm a fan of anti-abortion (yes, pro-life) protests, and I hope this one is huge but those graphic signs are a disaster, and not just because they're horrible PR. I know they represent The Truth About What Happens, but they fail to communicate the message effectively.

Former abortionist Carole Everett is right when she speaks of being so moved by placards of happy babies being held by their mothers, and so revolted by bloody, graphic autopsy photos. Having run six abortuaries in Houston, and having been picketed many times, she's now a powerhouse pro-life leader.

I used to be a big "let's show them the awful effects of abortion" supporter.

It doesn't work.

Our constant parade of slain fetus pictures hasn't changed a single mind. They make us look like the very judgmental freaks that The LA Times will report on the next day, complete with a dead baby photo op -- courtesy us.

I agree with Patrick. When I went on the West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco in January we made a huge impact without having to stoop to the sort of counterproductive tactics that obscures our true message of love and that merely gives our opponents something with which to paint us as loonies. I've spent plenty of time outside abortion mills in prayerful vigil (which, apart from the salvific aspects, confounds and infuriates the staff and is a positive witness to those who are presenting themselves for abortion). This call to roll out all the gruesome pics is totally irresponsible and I'd like to think you'd reject this Q.

Dear Venerable Aussie,

It is really heartening to hear that you take part in pro-life prayer vigils outside abortion mills. That's really great, and keep up the good work.

They say all cancer treatments work some of the time. Same with pro-life tactics. More than a few pro-lifers say photos of aborted babies have saved babies and converted people. So it is not irresponsible to call for them.

Whatever our tactics, it is vital that we be out at the mills and at demonstrations, saving babies.

Any pro-life presence outside abortion mills or elsewhere does good. It saves babies, changes hearts and lets the pro-aborts know we will never give up.

One factor to consider is turnaways -- the people driving along who see us praying and holding signs and then become set against abortion or even, when contemplating aborting their baby, or even when about to turn in to an abortion mill, change their minds, drive away and keep their little girl or boy.

Abortionists and pro-aborts object to photos of aborted babies more than any other pro-life tactic. That suggests they do save babies.

But again, everyone is free to have the kind of event they want; the main thing is to be out there at the mills and demonstrations.

Thanks for writing!

Dear Patrick,

Thanks for writing. A little in advance, Happy St. Patrick's Day!

You sound like a veteran pro-lifer, and that's great.

The comment I've just written to Venerable Aussie is what I'd write you, too. Some pro-lifers do testify that such signs work. And there are always the turnaways, too: people whom our signs convert, and we never know who they are unless they stop by later and tell us. That does take place.

But anyway, thanks for being pro-life. See you at the mills!
