Court of last resort

Probably you have heard that on Easter Monday the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Cardinal Mahony's request that he not have to turn over to a grand jury the personnel files of former priest Michael Baker and retired priest George Miller.

The Archdiocese now will have to hand over the documents within a few days. The L.A. Times notes that they will remain confidential for a while, during the grand jury proceedings, but they could become public if criminal cases ensue.

The Archdiocese also now might end up having to turn over similar files in other cases.

So, as the old sayings go, "Katy, bar the door!" and "Hold on to your horses!" And let us pray that the Archdiocese and the Church as a whole will emerge holier and stronger from the long tragedy of the scandals. "Jesus, mercy; Mary, help! Amen."

Q, we're discussing this over at Angelqueen, and I'm going to link your comments here over there.

While there's a sense of relief that the Cardinal may finally get his due, I also have great sadness. How this must grieve the heart of Nuestra Senora de la Reina de Los Angeles.

I hope for justice at last. And this appears to be the only way to uncover the rot that has long been entrenched in the archdiocese and the only way that the cardinal may be forced to resign. For decades he has been called 'teflon' for nothing seems to stick. But at some point perhaps even the best of lawyers may not be enough to protect him. I would not expect him to go quietly but to spend much money to defend himself. If hubbard in NY spent 4 million on his defense, who knows what might be spent to keep an evil agenda in power.

May it please God to send us holy priests and bishops.

Dear Barbara,

Thank you for linking the comments.

I'm sad, too; everyone is. There is no joy in reporting sad news such as this.

Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners, pray for us sinners!

JOSEPH D'HIPPOLITO SAYS...

You know, I have no sympathy for Mahony. Absolutely none. He deserves whatever he gets. For far too long, he has gotten away with evil in the eyes of God and man. Now, he must suffer the consequences. So, unfortunately, must the archdiocese, which is the innocent victim of his -- and, ultimately Rome's (meaning JPII's) -- malfeasance.

Perhaps after the lawsuits are over the diocese will be forced to sell off the concrete cathedral and start all over again. Maybe Red Roger will be sent off to Rome to assist Cardinal Law in his duties, whatever they are. When the smoke is clear let us pray the Bishop of Pheonix will be elevated to Archbishop and sent to Los Angeles to rid the church of its filth.
