The following headline and opening paragraphs from today's (April 20) L.A. Times (click on this post's title for the full story) are not pleasant reading -- and neither is the rest of the story. Later on in it, by the way, Cardinal Mahony's spokesman, Tod Tamberg, says there was no intent to mislead.

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony acknowledged to Los Angeles Catholics in his 2004 "Report to the People of God" that he left five priests in ministry despite complaints that they had molested children.
But a Times analysis of church records released since then shows that he left 11 other priests in ministry for periods up to 13 years after parishioners raised concerns about inappropriate behavior with children.
Seven of these 11 cases were not detailed in the People of God report. The other four were mentioned incompletely; the report said they were removed when complaints were lodged but did not disclose that the Los Angeles Archdiocese had received earlier reports of misconduct. [...]

I wonder if his staff shrinks assured him that they would not assault any more children, as seems to be the case in many other dioceses? What a dream world some of these pro homosexual professionals are living in, still.

And if you believe that, then you believe that, on Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch and gives presents to good little boys and girls...
When are the faithful of L.A. finally going to stand up and demand Mahony's removal from office???

I am a critic of our Cardinal, but there is something that I find not quite right with Catholics "standing up" and "demanding" the removal of a Bishop. I think vocal disagreement with errors in theology and judgement are legitimate. Other than that, pray for his conversion. He is a prince of the Church and a successor of the Apostles. Not a politician.
I live in the LA Archdiocese, and I think that it's time for him to go. I don't think that it would be appropriate for us to "Demand" his removal, however, I'd hope that the Pope would see the need for new blood.
The L. A. Times wrote, "16 priests remained on duty after complaints"
And what of the victims of these 16 priests? And what of the many victims who did not come forward? Did Mahony have compassion for these victims and do the right thing both as a man of the cloth and a servant of the people? No, he decided to take the path of deception and attempted to hide and cover up the failings of his ministary. When the truth is revealed, Mahony will be exposed for practices unfaithful not only to the Church, but to the laws of man. Ultimaely, he will be judged in both arenas.
Code of Canon Law states:
Can. 212 §1. Conscious of their own responsibility, the Christian faithful are bound to follow with Christian obedience those things which the sacred pastors, """inasmuch as they represent Christ""", declare as teachers of the faith or establish as rulers of the Church.
It is hard to find where the LA Cardinal represents Christ!
§2. The Christian faithful are """free to make known to the pastors of the Church their needs, especially spiritual ones, and their desires."""
The LA Cardinal appears not to listen to the 'needs' of the "faithful" but rather the unfaithful. Those calling for his resignation are expressing their desire for a better shepherd.
§3. According to the knowledge, competence, and prestige which they possess, """they have the right and even at times the duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful""", without prejudice to the integrity of faith and morals, with reverence toward their pastors, and attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons.
Canon Law is quite interesting. ;)Too bad many of the laity are not familiar with it and many shepherds do not follow it.
Please pray for the hidden suffering of faithful normal priests who have to endure a heavy cross.
Pray for the laity to speak loudly for their God given rights as catholics.
