+ Bishop James Sullivan + Requiescat in pace

The Grand Forks Herald reports today (click on this post's title) that retired Bishop James Sullivan of Fargo has entered eternal life. He was a Catholic priest for 51 years. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

From the article in the Herald:

"'Bishop Sullivan was a man of deep faith in God and commitment to the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist,' his successor, Bishop Samuel J. Aquila, said in a statement. 'His devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, inspired much of his work both inside and outside of the Diocese of Fargo,' Aquila said. 'He was a strong spiritual leader for the Catholic faithful and a loving father figure to the men who served as priests of the Diocese.'"

In addition, Bishop James Sullivan was a public pro-lifer. God rest his soul.

They have been some excellent bishops back there. My dad served on the board for Shanley High School in Fargo and knew Bishop Sullivan's predecessor, Bishop Driscoll. When my late dad was hospitalized, Bishop Driscoll caused a stir when he came to visit. The new bishop, Bishop Aquila, sounds like he's very good too, and my be in line for the job in St. Paul. Since he's from SoCal, I hope that Pope Benedict is grooming Aquila for the bishop's chair in Los Angeles or Orange County. It would be an answer to prayers to have an authentically Catholic shepherd in southern California.
