Exonerating yourself

Technical difficulties kept me from posting yesterday. But here goes today's post...

(1) USCCB President William Skylstad, bishop of Spokane, accused by a woman of sexually abusing her four decades ago, announced Thursday that (a) his lawyer had hired a private eye to investigate the woman and (b) the private eye had found no evidence to corroborate her story. So says the Seattle Times (click on this post's title).

(2) U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman of Portland decreed Wednesday that under Oregon law Fr. Andrew Ronan, who died in 1970, could be considered an employee of the Holy See, so the Holy See can continue to be the target of a sex abuse lawsuit that claims Fr. Ronan was transferred from parish to parish even though, says the AP, "he was known to be a molester." Judge Mosman also decreed that there are exceptions to the Foreign Sovereignty Immunity Act, which exempts foreign governments from U.S. jurisdiction.

More tomorrow.
