Some IHMs versus Cardinal McIntyre

Maybe you have heard of the revolt that dissenter sisters in the Immaculate Heart of Mary order in this Archdiocese waged against Cardinal McIntyre in the late 1960s. It got so bad that "IHM" was said to stand for "I Hate McIntyre." Suffice it to say that the dissenter sisters won, got control of the order's property and left 50-90 loyal sisters out in the cold.

You can see some perspective on that revolt at an Amazon page of reviews/comments (click on this post's title) on a recent pro-IHM, anti-Cardinal McIntyre book. Several of the comments support the book, but several others give the real story and are pro-Cardinal McIntyre. The dissenting sisters were misled, and many led astray, by Carl Rogers' "sensitivity training."

A book on Cardinal McIntyre that I have often hoped to get is the two-volume His Eminence of Los Angeles by Monsignor Francis J. Weber, the retired historian-archivist of our Archdiocese. Commenter "Anonymous" has read it several times and praises it highly.

The Sisters of IHM were victims of the human potential movement, specifically the Educational Educational Project, headed by psychologists Rogers and Coulson. Coulson knew there was something very wrong right after the project finished: "When we started...there were six hundred nuns and fifty-nine schools ... Now, four years later, a year following the formal completion of the project there are two schools left and no nuns." Coulson has apologized for the damage done to the Order and the Church. Even the renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow repudiated his work connected with this so-called education.

I'd never heard about the IHM/McIntyre conflict until today. What in God's Name happened to that order, that it was destroyed so quickly?

I have read of what happened to the IHM nuns; within a few years of the brainwashing they went from virginal brides of Christ to some being lesbian activists. But the thing was that those who lost their charisms still were teaching the children! So many Catholic children in the past decades lost their faith in the 'Catholic' schools. The devil knows what he is about.

The Cardinal was a faithful man and of course he had run-ins with the 'nuns' who had lost their faith and were determined to help others do it as well.

Dear LCB,

Yes, it was a real tragedy. Commenters Gravey and Anonymous are accurate in what they say about the reasons for the collapse.

In the case of the rebel IHMs, nun can also be spelled none!
