Another great American Churchman

Commenter "D" picks Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, shown above, as his "great American Churchman" nominee. "D" also notes that the wheels are turning in Bishop Sheen's canonization process. Click on this post's title to visit the official site of Bishop Sheen's cause.

Did you ever meet Bishop Sheen on his visits to Los Angeles? Do you know anyone whom he converted, here or anywhere else? Do you have any good stories about him?

Yesssss!!!
Now here was a Shepherd, and I mean it with a capital "S", too bad the Lord has not blessed us with more like him. Maybe we should behave in a manner that will move the Lord's heart to give us more Shepherds like him.

Archbishop Sheen wrote some prophectic things regarding Muslims. In a chapter of his book The World's First Love, Sheen speaks of Muslim's respect for Our Blessed Mother and how they regard her as being the most blessed of women. Even more than Mohammed's own daughter, Fatima. Because of the Muslim respect for Mary, Sheen said that Mary could be a sort of bridge between Muslims and Christianity. He believed that unless a good majority of Muslims accept Jesus through Mary, there will never be peace in the world. He also said something similar at a conference in Lisbon, Portugal in the early 1950's.

I've seen replays of his TV program, in of all places, at TBN. One show I saw just blew me away. In it, he explained, in everyday terms, the philosophy of the psychotherapists, Jung, Freud, and Ander [sic?]. Yes, he was flambouyant in his cape, but he was humourous, and never came across as condescending.

'Nice article on Archbishop Sheen by Fr. Andrew Apostoli.

I'm sure that he has acted in conversions throughout the English-speaking world due in large measure to his wonderful program "Life is Worth Living."

Has anyone seen his narration of the Traditional Latin Mass? It's available on You-Tube? Classic.

Dear Former Altar Boy,

Thanks very much for writing about Bishop Sheen's Holy Hour every day.

One of his many books was "Go to Heaven," and he sure helped show many people the way, didn't he?

Archbishop Fulton Sheen is an excellent nomination. Did you know that he only allowed one priest to substitute for him on his television show? That priest was Fr. Leonard Feeney. Archbishop Sheen also called Fr. Feeney the greatest theologian in America. So with my seconding of the endorsement of Sheen as a candidate I would like to nominate Fr. Feeney for American Churchman extraordinaire.
