Tragedy: Cdl Maida sells Our Lady Help of Christians for a mosque

Last Sunday, October 29, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated for the last time at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, a venerable Polish American parish in Detroit, after 83 years.

Why should Mass be said for the last time there? Because the Archdiocese of Detroit has sold Our Lady Help of Christians Church to Moslems for a cultural center and mosque.

You heard right. Click on this post's title for the Detroit News story. By the way, the article quotes a parishioner, 68, as saying, "It's going to hurt. There are a lot of memories there. But you've got to go with the times."

"The times," indeed. The late Father John Hardon, S.J., used to say that the Church died out in North Africa centuries ago and the same could happen here if we don't reform.

At this link you will find a recent photo of Cardinal Maida with Moslem leaders:

The Archdiocese's sale of Our Lady Help of Christians Church to Moslems is especially unfortunate when you recall that before and during Polish King Jan Sobieski's epochal victory over 300,000 invading Turks at Vienna on September 11 (!), 1683, Catholics all over Europe were praying the Rosary for victory and the citizens of Vienna were in their city's Capuchin church making special devotions to...Our Lady, Help of Christians.

Our Lady, Help of Christians, pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

This is indeed sad news, Our Lady surely must be shedding tears. This action is an insult and an apostasy. What should and could be avoided at any cost, the evil in the church today is astounding.

More than ten years ago, something similar happened in my own three-church parish of St. Thomas Aquinas in Palo Alto, CA. The former St. Aloysius church, which used to serve the student population at Stanford U. in the decades when Masses were forbidden at Stanford Memorial Church, was sold to the Ananda Self-Realization Fellowship. At least they salvaged out the stained glass, which was re-installed at Our Lady of the Rosary nearby.

Though it's always sad to see a Catholic church close and be sold, it's far, far worse to see it become a place where a false faith is propagated. Rather raze the church (the parish hall, etc., could stay) before allowing it to become a center for the ruin of souls. If that isn't in Canon law, it should be.

Dover,

I was thinking the same thing. Couldn't they find a different buyer. I would not be suprised if the current buyer is thinking of the sale in terms of conquest - and so should we.

I really wish I was wildly wealthy and could purchase these churches.

Ugh. It breaks the heart.

This is actually the second Catholic church in the Hamtramck neighborhood of metro Detroit that has been turned into a mosque. The first was Resurrection, just a few blocks away from Our Lady Help of Christians.

Dear AlexB,

Thanks for the update, sad though it is.

Dear Mike,

You are right. Bet they could have found another buyer.

In fact, in a lot of parish-closure situations around the country, dioceses have turned down parishioners who have raised lots of money to save a parish.

They have also turned down wealthy individual donors.

Dear Dover B,

Very sorry to hear about your parish church. What a travesty.

What is in the minds and hearts of anyone who would do such a thing?

Dear Mike,

Bet you are exactly right about the buyer thinking in terms of this being a conquest.

Let's face the truth, IT IS A CONQUEST FOR ISLAM!

Quintero, the sad thing is that they would probably or maybe have refused offers from Traditional Catholics!

Pray for Maida's apparently lost soul!
