Will the Pope's new Apostolic Exhortation be a dead letter here in L.A.?
The Holy Father has issued his new Apostolic Exhortation today (click on this post's title). Let us hope that the long-rumored Motu Proprio will not be far behind.But anyway, the Pope calls (in #62) for seminaries to teach future priests Latin so they can celebrate Mass in Latin and sing Gregorian Chant. The Pope also says the laity can learn to say common prayers in Latin and to sing Gregorian Chant. (He does not specifically mention the Tridentine Latin Mass, but he does not rule it out, either.)
Given Cardinal Roger Mahony's Religious Education Congress chatroom comment the other day that he can't be concerned with the "1%" of Catholics who want the Tridentine Latin Mass, what will he say, and do, now that everyone knows the "1%" seems to include the Vicar of Christ?
The stained-glass window above, from St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Cincinnati, is of the Keys of the Kingdom, which, as we know, Jesus gave to St. Peter and his successors. As we also know, all Catholics must obey the Pope, and that includes Cardinals.
So how soon will all graduates of what is left of St. John's Seminary be fluent in Latin?
The Pope also calls for more Confession; for more Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; for correct positioning of the Tabernacle; and, in the context of Catholic politicians and the Eucharist, for bishops to constantly reaffirm the "not negotiable" (the Pope's words) Catholic values that say legislators must introduce and support pro-life measures.
How soon will all that happen here in L.A.?
These are legitimate questions, even if they are also pretty much rhetorical.

I hope you noted that, with regard to placement of the tabernacle, the final decision rests with the diocesan bishop, so please don't give Cardinal Mahony a hard time if his decisions about tabernacle placement differ from your point of view.
Off topic, but I couldn't find an email link. I will be in the Los Angeles area for Triduum. Can you or your readers recommend a parish or monastery in L.A or Orange Counties where the Triduum liturgies will be celebrated reverently, authentically, and beautifully? Thanks.

I don't know, but it won't be before February 27, 2011. That's when Cardinal Mahony reaches the retirement age of 75.
And it might not be for a long while after that, as it will take time for a new bishop (hopefully an orthodox one) to get rid of all the entrenched liberals in the chancery apparatus, some of whom are priests of the Archdiocese committed to the revolution.
Mark: I'd recommend Holy Family in Glendale. They're pretty solid (except for the very loud youth Mass at 5:30 pm on Sundays.

My point of view is not what I want Cardinal Mahony to implement, just the sense of the Church.
Isn't it pretty clear that what the Holy Father wants regarding the tabernacle is not what many U.S. ordinaries have been doing?
The Holy Father's "point of view" should carry weight with you, me and the Cardinal!

Be sure to allow yourself lots of time to get where you're going, because the traffic out here is often pretty mammoth and slow.

Thanks for pointing out that a new archbishop would need to do some housecleaning. That's almost certainly something that every chancery around the USA needs.
They need to downsize, not just replace, of course.
They also need to expand their pro-life ministries and offices. Or, as is the case here in L.A., to reinstate them and expand them.

The Holy Father has just issued another document on pro-abortion,
pro-euthanasia politicans that is, at least in my opinion, worth
next to nothing.
On the one hand he throws down the gauntlet when he states that
opposition to these evils is NON NEGOTIABLE, but on the other hand
he picks up that gauntlet by stating that they MUST VOLUNTARILY
REFUSE COMMUNION!
What kind of Papal leadership is this? Where is it leading us?
I know I will be criticized for clearly stating what should be
more than obvious to any thinking Catholic, but I follow Our Lord's
words "the truth shall set you free"!
What this statement really means is that we can expect more of the
same old same old that has led the Church, if led is what you call
it, down and down since Vatican II.
I yearn and pray for another Pontiff like Leo XIII, Pius XII, a
Pontiff that fully knows that only he has was given the Keys, not a
cabal of weak-kneed or even apostate Bishops!
