Some archbishops are more forthright than others

Kudos to Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis for refusing to attend the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center Foundation's fundraiser last night (click on this post's title) that headlined pop singer Sheryl Crow, a prominent pro-abort who was raised in Missouri.

The archbishop also resigned from the foundation's board after the members defied his request that they disinvite Miss Crow.

Archbishop Burke said last week, "It's very painful for me, but I have to answer to God for the responsibility I have as archbishop. A Catholic institution featuring a performer who promotes moral evil gives the impression that the Church is somehow inconsistent in its teaching."

The archbishop added that the foundation's featuring Miss Crow is "an affront to the identity and mission of the medical center, dedicated as it is to the service of life and Christ's healing mission."

At the event last night, emcee Bob Costas, comedian Billy Crystal and Sheryl Crow all mocked Archbishop Burke for not attending. Costas "joked" that one of the singer's reasons for being at the event was "to get me excommunicated."

Okay, Costas, you asked for it; whoever is your bishop, he should call you in and explain to you what is at stake in compromising with evil.

As you can imagine, the "news" media, who function as a powerful public relations arm of the powerful abortion and homosexual lobbies, have lyingly portrayed Archbishop Burke as refusing to help sick children, when in fact he is DEFENDING children -- those targeted for abortion.

Sheryl Crow has had breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy in early 2006 and seven weeks of radiation. So we should pray for her and for all cancer survivors.

But she is also a pro-abort, and she did a campaign spot that helped pass a terrible pro-cloning initiative in Missouri last fall. If she wants to heal and save children, obviously she should include the 3,400 American children who receive the death penalty by abortion every day.

Please tell Archbishop Burke you are proud of him. Go to http://www.archstl.org and click on "contact the archdiocese" and then fill out your message there.

Cardinal Mahony, please follow Archbishop Raymond Burke's great example and stop compromising the Church's teaching by appearing in public with pro-aborts.

Be proud of him? The archbishop tried to cheat terminally sick children out of much needed cash to get them better. It was not about his narrow-minded view, it was about charity, about the children.

Anon,

Sheryl Crow holds sway because she is a famous singer and promotes abortion on demand. More particular to Missouris, where the Archbishop resides, Miss Crow also was on tv ads pushing for embrionic stem cell research, which goes against the Church's teaching of protecting children.

So the archbishop had no choice but to resign, or he would have contributed to Sheryl Crow's standing in Missouris by being associated with the archbishop.

Unfortunately, to many people don't practice their Catholicism and don't understand why the archbishop resigned.

I hope you do after this.

I sent in my note of support. How we need true shepherds like this Archbishop.

I am proud of him! Wish he were my bishop. My bishop went to a function with a pro-abort actor that was a fundraiser for the diocese. It was at my parish. The few who protested were escorted away.

I believe Archbishop Burke is Costas' archbishop. Costas has a big home in the St. Louis area.

Dear Anonymous 3:10 p.m.,

Archbishop Burke didn't try to cheat sick children at all.

Away back in February he asked the foundation to get a different entertainer. That's all he did -- and they refused to comply. The fault is theirs.

Dear Anonymous 9:44 a.m.,

Thanks for the news about Costas living in St. Louis.

Wish he would get some sense, some humility and some obedience.

Dear Anonymous 8:27 a.m.,

Sorry to hear about your bishop -- and about the pro-life protesters being led away. God reward the pro-lifers!

Crow giving her time and talent to this cause is no more an endorsement of abortion by Glennon Hospital than Burke is endorsing racism by being on the Board of an institution named for his segregationist predecessor.

The truth is that the late Cardinal O'Connor of New York, whose pro-life bona fides were clear, invited pro-choicers like Jeanne Kilpatrick and Ed Koch to assist with Catholic fundraising. Maybe the rules are different if you are pro-choice and a neo-con.

Dear Katherine,

Sheryl Crow's role in the just-concluded 2006 campaign in Missouri to legalizw cloning human babies was so prominent that the Archbishop had to avoid appearing with her. Cardinal O'Connor would have done the same thing.

The foundation's invitation to her was an intentional provocation to the Church and the Archbishop, and to every Catholic and pro-lifer.

If Cardinal Glennon (d. 1946) did not fight segregation, how does that mean Archbishop Burke today should consort with pro-aborts?

Seems the Pope is not in sync with Burke. Last week pro-abort Henry Kissinger was invited to speak at the Vatican.
