Did Bishop Skylstad really say that to the Vicar of Christ?

Probably you have heard the rumor that "the U.S. bishops asked Pope Benedict XVI not to issue Summorum Pontificum."

An article (click on this post's title) that is making the rounds on the Internet lends some credibility to that rumor.

EWTN's Raymond Arroyo writes, "According to several prelates I have spoken to, Bishop William Skylstad, the president of the American Bishops Conference, flatly told the [P]ope that the U.S. bishops opposed any revival of the old rite."

P.S. By the way, I should mention that this week's issue of The Tidings did run a letter to the editor that is well-written and very supportive of Summorum Pontificum.

I think the bishops, including Bishop Skylstad, who openly expressed their opinions to the Holy Father when the Pope sought them are to be commended. It's not easy to express a contrary opinion to a superior one knows is leaning in the other direction. But if the Pope wanted to know what the bishops thought, we should applaud the bishops who had the courage to tell him. Pope Benedict then had the benefit of these expressions and objections which no doubt assisted him in crafting the cover letter that accompanied Summorum Pontificum. This seems to have been an exemplary exercise in collegiality.

Dear Anonymous 1 p.m.,

Our bishops can say anything they want, but my point is that this proves what I predicted might be the case -- they just do not want the Tridentine Latin Mass.

If it was "courageous" of Bishop Skylstad to say what he seems to have said to the Pope, then how much more courageous will it be of him, now that the Pope has spoken, to affirm his loyalty to the Holy Father and to pledge to implement his wishes willingly, promptly, generously and fully.

Think that will happen?

Dear Anonymous 1 p.m.,

Bishop Skylstad can only affirm his loyalty to collegiality by living up to what the Pope asks.

If he does not, then that will prove he was exercising not collegiality but something else.

Fact: There is not 1 single parish in the Diocese of Spokane that offers the traditional Latin Mass per the 1962 missal.

Fact: Calls to the Spokane Diocese by faithful requesting the TLM be offered in the Diocese have been met with comments referring to the TLM as a "fossilized service" (and a polite "fat chance", in so many words).

The Bishop is flatly against any "wide and generous application of the directives" requiring that the TLM be made available for those who seek it.
