"Facing away from the people"

Summorum Pontificum does not say anything about which way the priest should celebrate Mass.

But while I am commenting today about the Mass, may I say that it is a typical big lie when the liberals say that in the Tridentine Latin Mass, the priest was "facing away from the people."

No, he wasn't. He was LEADING the congregation.

Is a soldier or Marine who leads his comrades into battle "facing away" from them? Of course not. He is LEADING them.

Quintero,

By the Pope stating that the Rites are not to be mixed, he is saying that the Mass of ST. PIUS V must be celebrated with the priest facing OUR LORD!

There is no reason for the Mass of Pope St. Pius V, O.P., to be celebrated exclusively with the priest and assembly facing the same direction. Even before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, Masses on the Papal Altar under Bernini's magnificent baldachino and Michelangelo's unsurpassed dome, and, of course, over the tomb of Pope St. Peter the Apostle, the celebrant--the Pope or a cardinal designated by him--faced east, which meant he faced the assembly. Since most churches had their main portals facing west and the high altar at the opposite end of the edifice, facing east meant facing the same direction as the congregation in the nave. Those seated in the choir usually faced north or south.

Dear Anonymous 2:22 a.m.,

I think you will agree that St. Peter's is not the usual parish church.

I hope you will agree that it is a great idea for the priest to face the altar, and Almighty God, to show that he is leading the congregation in worship.
