Offers of help overwhelm Sisters of Bethany

As ole Q hoped, Santa Barbarans and others across the Southland are offering to help the Sisters of Bethany avoid eviction by the Archdiocese of L.A.

A story (click on this post's title) in today's L.A. Times has the details.

Yeah, the nuns hob-nobbed with those champions of true Catholicism...John and Ken!! These Sisters may wear habits but I'm hard-pressed to consider them "faithful." Oh, what 15 minutes of fame will do!

Turns out, according to a priest who knows more than the L.A. Times, that these Sisters' superior in L.A. has been trying to get them out of that house for years. Mother Superior should now come forward and publicly set the record straight instead of letting the Archdiocese of L.A. take the heat.

Dear Hillary's...,

I don't know anything about John and Ken, and I bet the sisters do not, either.

I'm sure the sisters were just happy to learn that someone wanted to hear their side of things.

I'm also sure that they are the last people on earth to let anything go to their heads.

Remember that the sisters have not been disobedient. They have not said they would disobey. They are trying to see if something can be worked out.

Dear Liam,

The sisters in Santa Barbara have NOT said they would disobey the Cardinal's eviction order, so I doubt they would defy their superior, especially "for years."

And how would the superior be unable to control her sisters?

The present sniping at the sisters from some quarters is in marked contrast to the adulation given to the faction of the Immaculate Heart Sisters 40 years ago for disobeying James Cardinal McIntyre.

The Superior General of the Bethany Sisters from Guatemala has sent out a letter in which she apologizes for the conduct of the Sisters in Santa Barbara and for the pain they have caused to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Kudos to a gutsy woman!

Dear Liam,

I've just done a post about this situation.

How do you know about what is in Mother Luz's letter? The AP account of the letter that I have seen mentions no apologies.

And did the AP get ahold of the letter from Mother Luz herself, or from the Archdiocese?

I think you will agree that reasonable people can wonder whether Mother Luz wrote her letter under compulsion.

Was a draft sent to Mother Luz that she was forced to sign?

What's more, reasonable people are going to continue to wonder why good sisters' apostolates have to be shut down in order to fund the molester-cover-up payoff. The Archdiocese said no essential services would be affected.

Dear Quintero,
I would interpret essential services as those that are absolutely necessary for the Church to fulfill its mission. This would include parishes and schools through which the Church carries on the ministries of preaching, teaching and sanctifying. (I would include hospitals and medical facilities, but the Archdiocese does not own any so they are not assets that would or could be sold.)

Dear Liam,

Helping the poor is essential for the Church as well as individuals.
