This opinion piece sympathizes with the Sisters of Bethany

An opinion piece (click on this post's title) in today's L.A. Times sympathizes with the Sisters of Bethany and the poor people they serve in Santa Barbara.

It also says this:

"The impoverishment of the [C]hurch compounds the tragedy defined by damaged lives, disillusioned believers and blameless priests who now must minister under a cloud of suspicion created by their faithless colleagues. But the blame for this state of affairs belongs not to the victims or their lawyers but to an ecclesiastical culture that embraced the false gospel of 'least said, soonest mended.'"

What do you think?

These particular nuns do have a mother house they can go to and I'll bet that..countrywide... there are more tragic cases for nuns for whom we feel great empathy because they had zero to do with this mess.
It is amazing how Rome and the diocesan press in general got off scot free in all this because we have no sense of accountability as to the Vatican at all despite canon law giving Popes "supreme" and "immediate" jurisdiction. And one's low paid job with the diocesan press would be over if one spent weeks investigating priest abusers. So...what happened...the secular press filled the void and exposed our system and then blowhards amoungst us cursed the secular press. We need to hire a first rate consultancy firm that has a psychological arm besides a management arm. Court documents showed that the Vatican had an audio tape of Fr. Shanley in 1979 and they wrote Boston Diocese as to whether they were doing anything about him. Boston wrote back that in general they were working on such problems. Six years later Shanley was promoted to pastor near children in the mid 1980's. A curial official recently referred to the Church as being "expert in humanity". We need help..objective help from outside. Clergy can do nothing because their next meal always in a sense... comes from Rome. Paul and John the Baptist did not get their next meal from anyone other than themselves and so they were verbally critical of those above them...see Galatians for Paul and Peter.

Dear Bill Bannon,

Yes, it's been known since the story broke that the sisters could go to their mother house. Yes, there might be "more tragic cases."

But those things do not make the eviction right, of course.

Your suggestion that the Church needs "objective help from the outside" perhaps presumes that help from the outside would be actually objective and would be not anti-Catholic / anti-clerical.

History shows that past "help from the outside" has consisted largely of interference by monarchs trying to control appointments.

I think we need holy and fearless reformers from the inside, such as St. Charles Borromeo.

Pope Benedict and the Latin Mass in Chicago
9/11/2007 - 07:51 PST

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEDIA ADVISORY
Catholic PRWire

CHICAGO, IL - SEPTEMBER 11, 2007 - On September 14, 2007, the Motu Proprio "Summorum Pontificum" of Pope Benedict XVI, issued on July 7, 2007, goes into effect. This gift to the Church acknowledges the rights of the Extraordinary Form of the Traditional Latin Mass, which evangelized the the entire Western world and which was celebrated and loved by countless saints.

Pope Benedict XVI, in his Motu Proprio, explains that the Missale Romanum of 1962, promulgated by Saint Pius V and revised by the authority of Pope John XXIII during Vatican II, was never abrogated.

The Catholic faithful now rejoice to see the Roman Church thus regain her Latin liturgical Tradition, hoping that, by Pope Benedict's pastoral guidance, they may have frequent access to the treasure of the Traditional Mass for the worship of God, the immeasurable benefit of the Church and for the salvation of souls.

The Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, chosen by Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, to serve the pastoral needs of the faithful attached to Traditional Latin Mass, extends deep gratitude to our Sovereign Pontiff for this great spiritual benefit.

In joyful thanksgiving for the blessings of Almighty God poured out so lavishly upon the Roman Church by the hands of our Pontiff, the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (1962 Missale Romanum). The Latin High Mass will be held on September 14, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. at St. John Cantius Church, 825 N. Carpenter Street, Chicago, Illinois 60622. The public is welcome to attend.

After the Traditional Latin High Mass, the faithful will chant the "Te Deum" and join in a special outdoor procession (weather permitting) with the Relic of the True Cross. During the procession the Catholic faithful will chant the Litany of the Saints in Latin. Returning to the Church all will be invited to venerate the Relic of the True Cross.

The Cantate Domino Choir, directed by Rev. Scott A. Haynes, S.J.C., will provide choral music. The choir is to be accompanied by Walter Whitehouse, the Associate Chapel Organist of the Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago.

Your suggestion that we wait for a reformer like St. Charles Borromeo is a solution that depends on waiting....which means it is no solution. There... for example... is not one cleric you can name who was a hero in this sex abuse tragedy. You can name not one Cardinal nor Archbishop who was a hero...nor a Bishop nor a Monseignor....nor a Pope. So there is no Charles Borromeo around or you would be able to name me a number of heroes who overturned the tables on these pervs. You cannot so name a soul and it was the outside world that finally put a stop to the near sleep approach within Catholicism.
Pay a consultancy firm and they don't care whether you take their advice or not. Comparing them to monarchs is inappropriate. They give advice after analyzing your corporation and they don't care if then you ignore their advice....they simply want their check in the mail.
Catholic paranoia need not fear them at all.

Dear Bill Bannon,

It is not paranoia but prudence to be leery of handing over any Church matters at all to lay Catholics or to non-Catholics.

Of course, some parishes and other Catholic institutions do hire fundraising consultants. Many a church owes its wreckovation to consultants who work with Father Vosko and others, for example.

As for heroes: Many Catholic heroes in recent decades have sounded the alarm about the rise of homosexuals' influence in the Church, and they have suffered persecution for it.

These heroes have been ostracized, forced out of their religious communities, been stigmatized by being made to undergo psychiatric evaluation, exiled to isolated parishes and chaplaincies, etc.

Even orthodox bishops get shunned by their fellow U.S. bishops.

I submit that there are quite a few budding St. Charles Borromeos among us. We do not have to wait for them, and I did not say we had to wait for them. They are here.

We need far better appointments to our U.S. hierarchy. We do not need the advice of consultants about that. We need to start taking tha advice of orthodox Catholic groups that already exist.

Peace...we disagree....persevere and may God bless all your family and all their friends with His mercy and protection from catastrophes such as we see nightly on TV as to fires and car crashes etc. Peace.
And may He have mercy on all the dying worldwide who leave this world this week....Catholic or non Catholic.
