Government schools have widespread predation and cover-ups

The AP today is covering (click on this post's title) the widespread sex attacks and cover-ups by staffers and administrators in the government schools.

It's about time someone in the news media covers this criminal situation.

How can the news media claim to care about kids' safety if they ignore the huge dangers in government schools?

Nobody can blame celibacy rules for the government school attacks, either.

Nothing in what I am saying, by the way, is meant to minimize the clergy molestation situation -- just to say that the situation in government schools is another problem that also needs to be addressed.

Q;

Forgive the lenghty post, but I myself had wondered about the levels of abuse/molestation of minors in Catholic organizations vs. non-Catholic organizations.

Back on January 11-13, 2006 I did some primitive research to find out about the amount of molestation that occurs in public schools versus parochial schools & parishes.

Being in San Francisco, I chose to search the SF Chronicle Database for stories using the keyword "molest" for the period January 1, 2000 to January 11, 2006. The Chronicle database returned 1,506 results (I only went through 200 of these--research is fine, but I need to make a living!). Because I wanted to see what the CURRENT levels of sexual molestation/abuse were in public vs. Catholic organizations, I disregarded any cases that dealt with abuse/molestation that occured or was alleged to have occured before 1997. The results I got were these: 48 cases in the non-Catholic category (this was not just schools) and 3 in the Catholic category (2 in schools, one outside of a school/parish.)

As I said, my research was primitive, it took place only in the SF Chronicle database, using the parameters I've just described.

I'm not a scientist, and I'd like to see a real pro do this research, but those were the results I honestly got: 48 cases in non-Catholic organizations vs. 3 in Catholic organizations.

I absolutely agree with you that nothing should ever be done to minimize the horror of the Church sexual abuse scandal. It is something that we, as Catholics, will be living with for the rest of our lives. But this research gives me the confidence that (maybe) the Church is (finally) doing something right about this.

I'm sure Quintero and his Q-heads will find some way to blame the Archdiocese for the abuse in public schools. I know: the Archdiocese is full of gay people who don't want the Latin Mass! Darned Archdiocese.

Dear Gibbons,

Thanks for the news about your probe into cases of abuse in the government schools.

Your findings probably reflect the situation just about everywhere.

Virtually every week, and sometimes more than once a week, the L.A. Times reports such cases in the government schools.

Good for you for checking into the situation!

Dear Anonymous 9:05 a.m.,

Now that you mention it, probably more than a few chanceries around our USA have "gay" staffers who really hate the Latin Mass.

But no, I don't think we can blame them for criminality in government schools -- unless any of them have written articles or given talks that minimize the evil of sexual sins and undermine the Church's teachings on sexual morality.
