About Giuliani, don't praise Cardinal Egan just yet

Query: When will Cardinal Mahony excommunicate the Catholic pro-abortion politicians who receive Communion in our Archdiocese of Los Angeles, or when will he order all priests and other ministers of the Eucharist to refuse them Communion?

Answer: Never. (I sure would be happy to be wrong about this.)

Query: What is Cardinal Edward Egan doing about the thrice-married, pro-abortion GOP politician Rudolph Giuliani receiving Communion when Pope Benedict XVI was in New York City?

Answer: Reports (click on this post's title) are that Cardinal Egan says he deeply regrets what Giuliani did and will seek a meeting with him to insist he abide by a years-previous agreement that Giuliani would not receive.

Comment: Some pro-lifers are praising Cardinal Egan. And it is good that he is making a public issue of this matter. But in the end, won't Cardinal Egan merely keep relying on Giuliani's evidently nonexistent good will, instead of ordering ministers of the Eucharist to refuse him Communion?

We need our U.S. hierarchy, including Cardinal Mahony, Cardinal Egan and Archbishop Wuerl, to start heeding Cardinal Arinze's comments that even a child can see pro-abortion politicians should be refused Communion.

Before anyone says the Pope should order this done, let's remember that Pope Benedict did make his feelings clear in his airplane remarks on the Brazil trip, and that Popes throughout history have rarely disciplined or removed Cardinals.

May Cardinal Mahony and all bishops finally protect the babies by stopping the Catholic pro-abortion politicians from receiving Communion. Amen.

I think we should all praise Cardinal Egan. When any bishop stands up on this issue it only hurts the pro-life cause to become hypercritical. Other bishops are watching to see how Catholics rally behind the Cardinal.

Egan made it clear and unambiguous that pro-abortion politicians cannot receive Holy Communion. Look at the context. Giuliani is no longer in politics and he still was chastised! Moreover, although Egan could have chastised him for his marriage situation, he precisely chose to focus on the abortion issue and avoided the marriage! It's clear he honed in on his abortion support.

The genious of his statement is that all other pro-abortion Catholic politicians cannot read it any other way. It applies to them. All they have to do is just have to substitute their own names.

even though with Guliani's Marriage situation (and that alone doesn't make him able to receive Communion)...it's good that Cardinal Egan focused on the pro-abortion situation. Public sin, public penance..

Dear Joe of St. Therese,

Yes, it's good Cardinal Egan emphasized the right to life! But it seems a little odd for him to have left out the invalid marriage.

Dear Viator Catholicus,

You're right that it's great that Cardinal Egan said pro-abortion politicians may not receive!

Veteran pro-life leader Judy Brown of the American Life League has praised Cardinal Egan for that.

But she added that it would be good if he went one step farther and told all ministers of the Eucharist to refuse Communion, rather than relying on the pro-aborts' consciences.

That's what I'm trying to say here. Maybe my headline should have read, "Don't praise Cardinal Egan too much yet!"

And yes, let's hope Catholics will rally behind Cardinal Egan and his even bolder brothers in the hierarchy. Thanks for writing!
