Another mess in San Francisco

Congrats to the online California Catholic Daily for another good story (click on this post's title).

The Daily reports today that at the San Francisco Catholic Charities CYO annual awards dinner tomorrow night (April 11), one of the three honorees to whom Archbishop George Niederauer will present a Loaves and Fishes Award for philanthropy is George Marcus.

The Daily notes -- but the awards dinner article in the San Francisco Archdiocesan newspaper Catholic San Francisco does not -- that Marcus, who heads a real estate investment firm, gave $25,000 to help defeat Prop 73, a pro-life parental notification ballot measure, gave $100,000 to help defeat another such measure, Prop 85 and gave $50,000 for the Prop 71 ballot measure to fund fatal-to-embryonic-babies stem cell experimentation, among other donations.

The San Francisco Archdiocesan newspaper story about the awards dinner is in its current issue http://www.catholic-sf.org/FPArticle213.htm

As the California Catholic Daily reminds us:

"In 2004, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement, saying 'the Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.'"

Why can't our bishops obey their own instructions?

Catholic liberals love not only the pro-abortion politicians but also the pro-abortion rich people.

Don't look now, but what if Archbishop Niederauer is appointed to replace Cardinal Mahony here in Los Angeles in 2011? After all, his good friend Cardinal William Levada occupies the #2 post in the Vatican.

[Note added on April 11: In writing the last paragraph of this post, I somehow managed to completely forget that, of course, Archbishop Niederauer will be 75 in 2011 and so will have to submit his resignation then. Thanks to an anonymous commenter for jogging my memory on this.]

Ay, yi yi.

God Bless you, Q!

"Why can't our bishops obey their own instructions?"

That says it all.

Omg, please Q, I shudder in the thought of Abp. N replacing Mahony (it's already bad enough here).

It's really hard to be Catholic, when the Bishops don't even listen to their own instructions. THE USCCB gets something ight for once and they don't even follow that.

We need to pray for Abp N for sure.

I wonder sometimes, how long can these situations last. Is leaving the heretics in office for 3 years really the best thing. The damage would be like having 3rd degree burns, or having a leg that is completely shattered. Leave the shatterd legs or third degree burns? of course not. THose are replaced.

I think it'd serve the Church best if both were deposed of their office.

Enough of me playing armchair Pope.

Let us pray for the Abp that this somehow gets blocked in miraculous way. I mean of all the people he could have honored...

aye yai yai indeed.

Pray that the leadership of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in entrusted to the pastoral care of a bishop like Bruskewitz, Vasa, Chaput or Loverde.

Dear Joe of St. Therese,

We will escape having Archbishop Niederauer, because he is the same age as Cardinal Mahony and will have to submit his resignation in 2011 too.

For some reason I completely forgot that when I wrote this post about San Francisco. An anonymous commenter has pointed this out.

I think I'll blame the lapse on my having to do my income tax this week along with everything else.

Dear Anonymous 1:05 p.m.,

Yes, you are so right that there is no substitute for prayer.

Pope Benedict's recent picks for the U.S. hierarchy sound like good, solid ones. May that be so!
