The beautiful Latin Mass

The Tridentine Latin Mass, as shown above, will again be celebrated in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, once the sickness of the Sixties leaves us for good.

The photo above is of Latin Mass at historic Assumption Church in Windsor, Ontario. For more info about the Latin Mass, click on this post's title.

As I've said before and will say again, it is not valid for Cardinal Mahony or anyone else to say, Well, there's no demand for the Latin Mass, only 1% want it, and I've got to tend to the 99% who want the vernacular.

Why is it not valid for the liberals to say that? Because our hierarchy have created the relative lack of demand for the Latin Mass. They have criticized that Mass as if it was bad; and, for the past 40 years, they have suppressed first its celebration and then even any knowledge of it among the faithful.

It isn't right for any prelate or priest now to act as if by shunning the Latin Mass he is merely doing what the faithful want. If the hierarchy and the clergy always did what the faithful want, then 40 years ago they would have kept the Latin Mass, which the people most certainly did want, alongside the "New Mass."

The Holy Father is so wise to let us have both rites. Time for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to come around on this and promote the Latin Mass as being fully legitimate alongside the "New Rite."

If they don't, they need to explain themselves. Do they think something is wrong with the Tridentine Latin Mass, the Mass celebrated at Vatican II? If so, exactly what is wrong with it, and what is their authority for claiming so?

What do you think about the Latin Mass? Our Church celebrated it for more than a millennium, so why shouldn't we have access to it today? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

It is interesting to hear Cardinal Mahony say that he must focus on the 99% that want the vernacular. Why? Because Jesus taught the exact opposite, that you should go after the one that is lost, rather than the 99 who are already there…

I don’t think that it was coincidental that when the indult by JPII came out in the 80’s that the Cardinal started to rotate the Masses all over the archdiocese and put them at places that were rather inconvenient for the faithful. ..Had I known about the Latin Mass when I was younger, I know that I would have been there…The Latin Masses were never advertised, at least to my knowledge.

I can’t help to think Mahony and Co. do not have a like for the Latin Mass, as they don’t advertise it much…(as well as having to go through pages before finding the times for the Masses)

The TLM is a grace flowing Sacrifice, as I’ve mentioned on this blog before. It’s challenging because it requires interior participation. I serve at the altar at my parish St. Thérèse and can say the graces that flow from being at the altar are abundant. I only wish that the Masses were offered every day instead of on just Sundays at 1 at my parish. I’m working with the parish to see if there can be a daily evening Mass of the Extraordinary form. The youth are missing out on an abundance of graces that come from this Mass. (As one of my goals will be for the kids to go to a TLM when I become Youth Minister)

2/27/11 can’t come fast enough….although I do constantly pray for the Cardinal’s soul that he comes back to the Faith, I know that his job is tough, but there are somethings that he HAS to do…ie protect Life, offer the Mass with devotion, and no Liturgical Abuses, and encourage his flock to go to Mass (whether it be the EF or OF is besides the point)

07/07/07 was a great day for the Church, We are blessed because of it…Viva il Papa.

Q,

All it takes is for you to go to your parish priest and ask for it.

I think every parish should have at least one Sunday mass in the extraordinary form. You are right--it is basically discouraged by the clergy. This is wrong. I asked my parish priest, and when asked when we would have mass in the EF he said "never." Isn't that nice? He was basically rude about it. I'm not sure HOW to re-approach him on this....

Q, thank you for giving our Windsor Mass a mention. We have worked hard to get it to where it is today. As one who visits L.A. monthly on business, I have kept an eye on Tridentine Mass developments in your region.

Can you or anyone verify that St. Mary's in Huntington Beach is having a weekday Tridentine Mass as mentioned here:

alex b: I don't believe there is daily TLM at St. Mary's in HB, but I do know there is one on Sundays at 12.

Sometimes you can't win. Percentages can always be skewed to fit an agenda. I'm sure there are a few parishes where a significant portion of the congregation would vote for the priest not to preach, what would the cardinal say?
Or if 99% of practicing Catholics wanted him to excommunicated pro-abortion politicians in LA would he do it?

By making the TLM the extraordinary form the Pope was not merely throwing a bone to those who want it. [Ecclesia Dei was supposedly to do that.] Instead, he was saying there is inherent value in the extraordinary form for the whole Church. All Catholics should be exposed to it.

What some resistent bishops and priests may not realize is that Tradition always is there and always comes back. It cannot be suppressed.

Dear Joe of St. Therese,

Thanks for writing about the TLM and your love for it. Yes, 07-07-07 was a super day for the Church!

Dear Kozaburo,

Thank you for writing! Yes, it's the case that a priest may say the TLM privately and people may attend. But it's more difficult to get a pastor to schedule a TLM for the entire parish.

In some parishes around the USA, pastors have granted TLM requests from the parishioners or even begun the TLM on their own. But others refuse or raise roadblocks, and some bishops oppose the TLM.

Dear Anonymous 9:57 p.m.,

Thank you for your first-person account! Sorry to hear that your request was refused.

Could you and other parishioners band together and ask for the TLM? The motu proprio says that is the way to go. Then, if the pastor refuses, your group can ask the bishop to grant the request.

Dear Dave,

Thank you for the link to the photos of pro-abortion Hillary C. sickeningly flaunting a Catholic-images bracelet on the day of the primary in Pennsylvania.

Remember the giant Bible that Bill Clinton used to tote to church?

Dear Viator Catholicus,

Thank you for the excellent points you make, including whether the Cardinal would excommunicate the Catholic pro-abortion politicians if 99% of the flock wanted that.

Amen to your statement, "Tradition is always there and always comes back. it cannot be suppressed."

BTW:
My statement about Tradition always being there and always coming back was actually once said by Patriarch of Venice Albino Luciani who later became John Paul I.

Dear Viator Catholicus,

Thank you for citing Cardinal Luciani (later Pope John Paul I), and for knowing about the point he made, in the first place!

I recall once reading a good essay that Cardinal Luciani wrote about marriage. He was a treasure.
