Archbishop Niederauer vs. Nancy Pelosi, kind of

Nice to see that the home page of the Archdiocese of San Francisco web site reprints, front and center (click on this post's title), the usccb.org statement of Cardinal Rigali and Archbishop Lori against pro-abortion Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her misrepresentation last Sunday of the history of Catholic teaching on aborting babies.

Don't know if Archbishop Niederauer is going to make his own statement against Nancy Pelosi, but his reprinting of the usccb statement is kind of a step in the right direction for him.

The S.F. web site also carries a pro-Proposition 8 (defense of marriage) feature.

Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., has spoken out against Mrs. Pelosi. So has Cardinal Egan of New York. So have Archbishop Chaput and Bishop Conley of Denver.

No statement from Cardinal Roger Mahony about Nancy Pelosi's misrepresentation of Catholic teaching appears tonight on the home page of the web site la-archdiocese.org

Maybe there's pro-Prop 8 material there, but I didn't see it at first glance.

But one statement is there: "Cardinal Mahony calls for presidential candidates to be held accountable on immigration reform."

Says the cardinal, "A human being’s worth is defined by their [sic] God-given dignity, not by what papers they carry."

When is Cardinal Roger Mahony going to post a pro-Catholic, anti-Pelosi statement on his web site in order to give his flock guidance on true Catholic teaching about aborting babies?

Are preborn babies "human beings" with "worth" and "God-given dignity?"

Niederauer's own statement will be arriving on September 5:

Archbishop George Niederauer will address recent comments by Pelosi in a column in the Sept. 5 issue of Catholic San Francisco, archdiocesan spokesman Maurice Healy said. (source)

Supposedly he is writing a column on it to be releases Sep 5th which is a way to slow response.

Indeed, it will be interesting to see whether we hear a peep from Cardinal Mahony on the Pelosi scandal that has created an uproar in the Catholic blogosphere. California Catholics also are wondering the same of Abp. Niederauer in the diocese that Pelosi resides in. I see the S.F. archdiocese saw fit to have an article on the controversy in its online version of its weekly (see: http://catholic-sf.org/FPArticle14.htm) but the flock will apparently have to wait until Sept. 5 to hear from the archbishop himself when he will have a column about this published in the weekly. One reader wonders if he needs the time to get some talking points from the Democratic hierarchy in Denver!

I've become a frequent viewer of your blog. Keep up the great work. We are unfortunately in a dark period of this archdiocese.

She has a very strong argument about her position.
She's never refused Communion, so how can being a pro-abort be a sin?

AGAIN the shepards show how utterly unfit they are to lead the flock. This is getting old.

Archbishop Niederauer HAS made his statement about being a pro-abort pol.

He ALLOWS her to take Communion.

What isn't CRYSTAL CLEAR about that?

Dear Clayton,

Yes, thanks for posting this -- I'd seen it but hadn't had a chance to post it yet. The web site of the archdiocesan newspaper Catholic San Francisco has a couple of items.

How much trouble could it be for Archbishop Niederauer to say a brief something before Sept. 5?

Dear Jeff Miller,

Thanks -- yes, that sure is a very, very slow response.

Dear Pax Christi in Bakersfield,

Thanks -- yes, Cardinal Mahony should be giving his flock guidance and so should Archbishop Niederauer.

You might be right about the Dem talking points! (Just kidding -- but these days, you never know.)

Dear George,

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, it's not the happiest of times in our archdiocese -- but Catholics like you do make things brighter!

Dear Dave,

You're exactly right about it being a statement when the hierarchy don't refuse Communion to notorious pro-aborts -- and they don't even tell the pro-aborts to stay away of their own volition. Thanks!

Don't ask me which is the worse sin, though...

Since "cafeteria Catholic" politicians, such as Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Joe Biden, Patrick Moynahan and Nancy Pelosi, are so public- with their careers and their faces- especially with their anti-life positions, opinions and voting records being quite easily available for public review and sinfully scandalous influence- one, such as I, who understands the most basic ecclesial and biblical teachings on sin, papal and episcopal duty and authority et al, knows that these people are indeed defacto excommunicants who are truly guilty of mortal, apparently-unrepentant, well-publicized sin. None of these "Catholic" politicians has ever publicly recanted and denounced their contra-ecclesial mantras and positions. Every single one of the U.S. Catholic bishops should issue explicit directives which clearly state the Magisterial authoritative directive: NO Holy Communion until you have PUBLICLY AND IN FACT recanted and denounced your contra-life, contra-magisterium positions! PERIOD! The same interdict and excommunication should apply for those who knowingly gave Holy Communion to these defacto-heretics and de-facto schismatics. PERIOD!

Dear Ebacherk,

Thank you for an outstanding comment.

How can the pro-aborts' support for and facilitation of aborting millions of babies be anything but a blot on their consciences?

It makes sense that there should be disciplinary measures for the bishops who keep giving Communion to the pro-aborts.

You might be right when you call the pro-aborts schismatic. Nancy Pelosi's defiance of the bishops' admonitions to her borders on or could even constitute a schism: Is a "Pro-Abortion Catholic Church" in its infancy (pun intended)?

I pray that Cdl. Mahony will come out with a statement, but I'm not counting on it.

It's good that some bishops have come out and stated the true teaching of the Church on Life beginning at Conception.

"A human being's worth is defined by their God given dignity, not the papers that they carry"

Which I reply to the Cardinal, then what about the innocent babies that you're allowing to be killed under your watch? Do they NOT have dignity? Life is to be protected from Conception to natural death. A major teaching moment was missed by the Cardinal Archbishop. A Bishop is the primary teacher, I wonder why he's not doing such?

The archbishop's column came out and was deemed inadequate by Catholic World News: http://www.catholicculture.org/news/features/index.cfm?recnum=60174

She responded with an agreement to have hopefully what will be more than a quaint tea party with him: http://www.examiner.com/a-1572993~Pelosi_OKs_talk_with_SF_bishop_on_church_teachings.html

Haven't we seen this kind of tired act before with nothing becoming of it? Well, let's see if the archbishop does the right thing and makes it clear to Pelosi the stark choice that she faces and the consequences (like formal excommunication) that will follow should she make the wrong one.

Dear Pax Christi of Bakesfield, and Dear Everyone,

When the archbishop and Nancy Pelosi do get together, whenever that is, it sure would be interesting to hear their conversation.

Wonder if we'll even know when it takes place?
