Not all clergy support Prop 8

It's sickening but true: Not all our clergy support Prop 8, the defense of marriage initiative.

Never mind that our California bishops have endorsed Prop 8 and are encouraging us Catholics to distribute pro-Prop 8 material!

Today a priest was sniping at Prop 8 to me and telling me about the "injustices" that homosexual pairs (that's my term, not his) supposedly face.

Could he explain why the committing of sodomy together by two individuals would somehow mean they have rights reserved to married people? Nobody can explain that.

Someone also told me about someone yesterday who tried to make a pro-marriage volunteer stop handing out pro-Prop 8 material at a Catholic gathering on a Catholic high school campus in this archdiocese. The same Prop 8 material our bishops are telling us to distribute! (This is third-hand material, so I don't really know the particulars.)

It is time, don't you think, for Cardinal Mahony to tell all his clergy in no uncertain terms to start unequivocally supporting Prop 8 and to stop badmouthing it and undermining it!

I imagine you're aware of the situation with Fr. Geoff Farrow in Fresno, who spoke out against Prop 8 to the media and his community at the Newman Center before vacating the premises and starting a blog.

The bishop has since suspended his faculties.

Dear Clayton,

Good to hear from you. Yes, I was tracking the situation and this afternoon I've managed to do a post about the whole thing.

Thanks for the tip, and please keep any and all of your valuable tips and comments coming this way!

Well, we finally hear from Mahony on the issue... once the victory has been won.

The archbishop of Los Angeles says the California vote banning gay marriages was the result of "an unprecedented coalition" that "understood the importance of maintaining the bedrock institution of marriage." (source: ZENIT)
