Happy St. Patrick's Day 2009!

Okay, I'm heading for the sack and I don't have a good illustration of St. Patrick handy right now -- but I still want to wish you and yours a Happy, Holy, and Blessed St. Patrick's Day 2009.

On St. Patrick's Day let's be sure to say a prayer for all the Irish people, the spiritual children of the great and beloved Apostle of Ireland.

God bless you and keep you!

It's sad that his memory is sullied with the wanton drunkeness associated with the day. I once heard a media commentator refer to the parades as drunken jihads. Not too far wrong there I'm afraid. I can only dread the vomit laden paths tomorrow as I walk to work. 40 shades of green indeed.

Dear Joe of St. Therese,

And Happy St. Patrick's Day to you, and Happy St. Joseph's Day, too!

Thanks for being such a good blog-friend!

Dear Catholic Observer,

Don't worry -- St. Patrick's Day is a major feast day in Ireland, and many Irish people celebrate the day by going to Mass and later having a family dinner.

Countless non-Irish people in the USA and elsewhere, who know zero or virtually zero about Ireland, do come out once a year, along with some people of Irish descent who should know better; and they do commit "wanton drunkenness" in pubs and restaurants.

But that is a far cry from ever being able to sully St. Patrick's glorious and imperishable Catholic legacy of Faith and holiness.

In my experience, St. Patrick's Day parades are nothing like what that "media commentator" claimed.
At every St. Patrick's Day parade I've attended, in cities large and small, I've NEVER seen public drunkenness or "vomit-laden paths."

So I'll keep humming "Forty Shades of Green", if you don't mind, and being proud of Irish Catholicism and of all the Irish people have given the world, including our Archdiocese of Los Angeles, especially all the missionary priests sent out through the years.

But thank you for writing, and I hope that your St. Patrick's Day 2009 turned out much better for you than you expected.
